History

Next Generation of Original Morning Star, FGBC

We are not a monument; We are a movement

We’ve Come a Mighty Long Way.”

It All Began With One Man’s Vision....

Our journey started with the late Chairman Deacon Bathelona Thornton, a lifelong member of The Original Morning Star Full Gospel Baptist Church. His unwavering faith and leadership opened the door for a new generation to rise.

Recognizing the spiritual gifts of then-Minister Tyrone Smith, Chairman Thornton encouraged him to step into pastoral leadership. That vision would one day give birth to what we now know as Next Generation of Original Morning Star Full Gospel Baptist Church — a thriving ministry dedicated to rebuilding and restoring lives.

From Five Members to a Thriving Family After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, many members were displaced, and the church faced unimaginable challenges. But under the leadership of Apostle Tyrone Smith, God turned loss into new life. With just five members, Pastor Smith began to rebuild — walking the streets, evangelizing, and sharing the message of hope. Through faith and hard work, those five became over 400.

In 2007, the church purchased and paid off its new home at 3536 St. Ferdinand Street, giving birth to our new name:
Next Generation of Original Morning Star Full Gospel Baptist Church.

And we haven’t stopped growing since.
